Founded in 1898, FC Thun played in lower leagues for decades. 2004/05 was only FC Thun's fourth season in Switzerlands top league. The club surprisingly finished the season on second place and therefore was qualified for the UEFA Champions League. Starting in the second qualifying round, Thun won against ukrainian side Dynamo Kyiv, and then defeated Malmö FF in 3rd round (they won away with 1:0 and at home with 3:0). So FC Thun was qualified for the group stage of the Champions League, where the club was drawn against Arsenal, Ajax Amsterdam and Sparta Prague. The matches between Thun and Arsenal:

22 November 2005, Stade de Suisse Berne, 0:1 (goal from Arsenal in 88th minute, a regular goal from Thun was denied)
